Our working process
Every project, every context and every communication is different. The FrontlineSMS team’s approach begins with an initial scoping conversation to ensure we have a comprehensive understanding of a client’s objectives, baseline knowledge and needs. From this, we’re able to tailor our tools, process and team to deliver the most value on a case-by-case basis. All of our estimates are personalized and follow this initial consultation.
After a client gets in touch, we’ll direct them to the expert on our team that brings the most experience, knowledge and enthusiasm to achieving the project goals. We have developed solid foundations in a wide range of sectors including healthcare, legal services, mobile transactions, education, governance, journalism and audience engagement (for more details see Sector Specific Expertise).
On our first meeting, phone or Skype call, we will work with a client to scope the details and needs of the project. After we’ve refined the details together, we’ll develop an estimate to illustrate what we can offer along with an initial indication of costs. If a client decides to move forward we’ll finalize the fee, agree on the conditions and arrange all of the necessary documentation.
If a client is interested in a training or workshop, we work with them to understand their needs and priorities, and determine the best length and style of event for the particular context. We are happy to take part in projects in the field, and we often find that advice offered in this situation lays foundations for the most successful mobile adoption.
Where software customization is required, our Nairobi-based team will work with a client to develop a specification and estimate, as accurately as possible, how long it will take to build what is needed. Where additional user interface or graphic design are required, we will include it in our timeframes and cost proposal so that we can work with our existing consultants for swift, effective results. Our in-house developer team are the experts on our platform, and have significant knowledge and experience with compatible and complementary tools. We not only provide the highest quality coding available on our platform, but also maximize the impact of a client’s funding.
While our door is open to both proprietary and private software development work, we have a strong preference for working with clients who are willing to make products available to the community by allowing us to release the code under our standard AGPL open-source license and rolling the extension or update into the software made available to all our users. By integrating functionality built as a result of consulting contracts, we enable clients to expand the impact of their work by offering tools to users around the world. For clients, more users mean better testing and more suggestions for improvement, so everyone benefits from a better tool.
