Phones and Modems
In order to get started FrontlineSMS requires a GSM modem or a mobile phone to be connected to your computer via Serial, USB or Bluetooth. GSM modems are more commonly used to browse the Internet and send and receive email from a computer, all through your mobile network. These devices come in many shapes and sizes, although you will most probably recognise them as the USB “dongles” sold in many mobile phone shops.

GSM Modems
Please note that we recommend a GSM modem over a phone because they are much easier to set-up, are becoming increasingly affordable, and have a much higher capacity for sending and receiving messages reliably. GSM modems come in different shapes and sizes, but typically resemble those shown on the right.
Because of technical differences between makes and models, not all GSM modems or phones will work with FrontlineSMS. In general, most modems should work but we have only been able to test some of those on the market. Below you will find a list of some of the modems and phones which we have tested and know work, but there are many more which work we don’t know of.
Crowd-sourced Device Database
We are now also collecting a crowd-sourced list of devices which are compatible with FrontlineSMS, which you can find here. Please note this database is made up of reports on device testing carried out by FrontlineSMS users, rather than devices tested directly by the FrontlineSMS team.
Internet Services
Although FrontlineSMS was originally developed to allow group text messaging in places where there wasn’t Internet access, more recent versions allow messages to be sent through the internet if and when it is available. Messages sent this way are generally faster and cheaper than sending through an attached mobile phone or modem, but you do need to set up an account and buy messages up-front using a credit card. FrontlineSMS currently comes with support for the Clickatell and IntelliSMS messaging services. You can read more about this in our help files here.
Purchasing Modems from FrontlineSMS
You can purchase an unlocked Huawei E173 USB modem from FrontlineSMS upon request. This device has been tested and is known to be compatible with FrontlineSMS. As the modem is unlocked it will work in any country; you will just need to insert a local SIM card. However, it is worth looking at the options for purchasing a device where you are based, as this may be cheaper for you. Unlocked modems are preferable if you plan to use FrontlineSMS in more than one country, but if you are staying in one location then you can just purchase any compatible device. For further information on purchasing a modem please contact us through the contact form found at the bottom of our contact page.
