Phones and Modems

To get started, you need to make sure that FrontlineSMS has a connection to the mobile network. One way to do this is to use a GSM modem or a mobile phone connected to your computer via Serial, USB or Bluetooth. GSM modems are more commonly used to browse the Internet and send and receive email from a computer, all through your mobile network. These devices come in many shapes and sizes, although you will probably recognize them as the USB “dongles” sold in many mobile phone shops.

GSM Modems

Please note that we recommend using a GSM modem, rather than a phone, because they are much easier to set up, are becoming increasingly affordable, and have a much higher capacity for sending and receiving messages reliably. GSM modems come in different shapes and sizes, but typically resemble those shown on the right.

Because of technical differences between makes and models, not all GSM modems or phones will work with FrontlineSMS. Most modems should work but we have only been able to test some of those on the market. Below you will find a list of some of the modems and phones which we have tested and know work, but if a modem is not on the list, this does not necessarily mean that it will not work.

Crowd-sourced Device Database

We are now also collecting a crowd-sourced list of devices which are compatible with FrontlineSMS, which you can find here. Please note this database is made up of reports on device testing carried out by FrontlineSMS users, rather than devices tested directly by the FrontlineSMS team.

Web-based SMS Services

Although FrontlineSMS was originally developed to allow group text messaging in places where there wasn’t Internet access, more recent versions allow messages to be sent through the internet if and when it is available. Messages sent this way are generally faster and cheaper than sending through an attached mobile phone or modem, but you do need to set up an account and buy messages up-front using a credit card. FrontlineSMS currently comes with support for the Clickatell and IntelliSMS messaging services. You can read more about this in our help files here.

Further Information

Please find the list of devices the team has tested with FrontlineSMS directly below. Please note, the below device reports are valid whether you are using Version 1 or Version 2 of FrontlineSMS. If you need any further information, you can learn more about troubleshooting devices here. For more information about getting started with FrontlineSMS software, see our user resources. Please feel free to visit the Community Forums, or contact the FrontlineSMS Team if you have any questions.

FrontlineSMS Version 2 runs in your browser. We support Chrome, Firefox (v 3.5 or later), and Internet Explorer (v 8 or later). We are actively working to support earlier versions of Firefox and Internet Explorer. For best results, please update your browser at the same time as updating or installing Version 2.

WHAT TECHNOLOGY DO I NEED?

A COMPUTER
PC Desktop or Laptop
Microsoft Windows 98 or later

Please note: FrontlineSMS works most effectively with a Windows operating system. With a Macintosh or Linux system you may need additional technical skills or support to get FrontlineSMS running.

A MOBILE PHONE OR GSM MODEM

FrontlineSMS requires a mobile phone or GSM modem to be connected via Serial, USB or Bluetooth. Because of technical differences between makes and models of phones, not all devices are supported, so please check here! We always recommend GSM modems.
